A current-patch editorial ranking of every Valorant controller, graded on smoke coverage, flexibility, and how much map control each kit can lock down alone.
By VALMAUK Staff
Controllers are the agents who shape the map with smokes, deciding which fights happen and which sightlines simply close. Strong controller play is the backbone of structured attacks and confident defenses alike. Below we rank all seven controllers on how well their kit lets one player blanket a site and dictate tempo.
This is a current-patch (Patch 12.10) editorial read of the controller meta. The agent roster was verified against valorant-api, and grades reflect reasoning and role-fit only — not any win-rate or pick-rate statistic.
| Agent | Tier | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Omen | S | Smokes, a paranoia blind, and a short teleport make him the most flexible solo controller, able to smoke, reposition, and fake at will. |
| Brimstone | S | Top-down smokes placed from a map, a stim beacon, an incendiary, and the Orbital Strike give the cleanest one-shot site execute in the game. |
| Viper | A | A toxic wall and orb let her split a site in half, and her control over post-plant space makes her elite on larger maps. |
| Astra | A | Star-based global smokes let her set up control anywhere on the map pre-round, rewarding teams that plan executes in advance. |
| Clove | A | A modern controller built to keep impacting the round even after dying, giving solo-queue players uniquely forgiving smoke value. |
| Harbor | B | Water-based shields and walls offer unusual cover that blocks bullets, strong utility but harder to time than a standard smoke. |
| Miks | B | A newer controller whose kit centers on flexible smoke coverage; capable on most maps but still settling into the meta. |

Every team wants exactly one controller, and the right choice leans heavily on the map. Omen and Brimstone are safe, self-contained picks that work everywhere, with Brimstone preferred when your team coordinates fast executes around his Orbital Strike. Viper and Harbor shine on bigger maps where their walls can cut a site in two, while Astra and Clove reward players who think a full round ahead.
Whichever you choose, remember that good smokes are about timing as much as placement — a smoke thrown a beat too early just tells the defense where you are going. Master one controller deeply rather than dabbling in all seven, and your whole team's structure improves.
