Part Controller, part Sentinel, part chemical-warfare specialist. Viper warps big maps with a fuel-gated wall, a self-replenishing cloud and the most oppressive post-plant ult in the game.
By VALMAUK Staff
Viper is the Controller for players who like to micromanage. Instead of timed smoke clouds, she runs a fuel meter that powers a one-way wall and a poison cloud, both of which she can turn on and off at will and which Decay anyone who walks through them. That fuel economy makes her a brain-heavy pick, but it also makes her the single best agent for controlling enormous sightlines, which is why she has anchored the meta on big maps for years.
| Ability | Key | Cost | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snake Bite | C | ~300 credits, 1 charge (as of the current patch) | EQUIP a chemical launcher. FIRE to launch a canister that shatters upon hitting the floor, creating a lingering chemical zone that damages and applies Vulnerable. |
| Poison Cloud | Q | ~200 credits (as of the current patch) | EQUIP a gas emitter. FIRE to throw the emitter that perpetually remains throughout the round. RE-USE to create a toxic gas cloud that Decays opponents inside it at the cost of fuel. Can be picked up and redeployed before the round starts. |
| Toxic Screen | E | Signature, free to deploy (as of the current patch) | EQUIP a gas emitter launcher that penetrates terrain. FIRE to deploy a long line of gas emitters. RE-USE to create a tall wall of toxic gas that Decays opponents that cross it at the cost of fuel. |
| Vipers Pit | X | Ultimate, ~7 points (verify in-client for the current patch) | EQUIP a chemical sprayer. FIRE to spray a chemical cloud around Viper, creating a large cloud that Nearsights players and Decays the health of enemies inside it. HOLD the ability key to disperse early. |
Her Passive, Toxic, quietly generates the fuel that powers the wall and cloud; enemies crossing any of her gas are instantly hit with at least 30 Decay, which scales the longer they stay in it.
Viper is an economy game. Set up your wall before the round starts so you spend no fuel walking to position, then split a site or a long sightline in half — your team plays one side, the enemy is blind on the other. Use the Poison Cloud to cap the open end of the wall so there is no gap to peek through. The Decay effect means anyone who pushes through your gas drops to 70 HP or lower, so even if they swing, your team is fighting a weakened enemy.
Manage your fuel like ammunition: deactivate the wall and cloud when nobody is contesting them so you have gas left for the retake or post-plant. Snake Bite is your defuse-deny and your fuel-free clearing tool — throw it on the bomb after planting. Vipers Pit is a round-winner in post-plant: drop it over the spike and hold an angle inside, where you can see out but enemies cannot see in.
"A good Viper does not smoke a site. She makes half the map stop existing.
Viper has historically been close to mandatory on the largest maps in the pool — Breeze and Icebox in particular reward her cross-map wall, and Lotus and Pearl have favoured her at points too. She is weaker on small, tight maps where a single wall cannot cover every angle. Map viability shifts every time Riot touches the rotation or her numbers, so confirm the current pool before you commit.
Tip: pre-place your wall during buy phase using a fixed reference point on the map geometry. Deploying it before you move means you spend zero fuel travelling and arrive with a full tank for the actual fight.
High. Viper has the steepest learning curve of any Controller because of fuel management, wall placement and the discipline to not waste gas. She is enormously rewarding once mastered, but she is the last Controller you should learn, not the first.
