osu! is completely free to play, and supporter is its optional paid tag - a way to fund the game that also unlocks a set of convenience and cosmetic features. It gives no gameplay advantage and no pp, so whether it is worth it depends entirely on how much you use the features it unlocks.
Supporter gives zero competitive advantage. It does not affect pp, hit windows, or anything about how the game plays - it is convenience and cosmetics only. Nobody is beating you because they paid.
If you download a lot of maps, osu!direct and the download perks alone justify it for many players - grabbing maps without leaving the game is a genuine time-saver. If you mostly replay maps you already have and do not care about cosmetics, you can happily play forever without it.
